HELPING ANIMALS AND COMMUNITIES

DART Deployment:  Amy Edwards and Fran Jensen, as part of the Bay Area DART Team, rescued and sheltered over 700 animals at the largest puppy mill in the state of Tennessee in 2008!  Everything from dogs and cats to parrots and miniature donkeys were saved from a life of neglect at Pine Bluffs Puppy Mill in Lyles, Tennessee.

BP Deep Water Horizon Oil Spill... LEARN - to help the Birds Survive the Oil!

This noble Brown Pelican has encountered oil on the surface of the water, the oil is stuck to it's feathers, causing them to mat and separate, impairing their waterproofing abilities and exposing his sensitive skin to extremes in temperature.

He is probably in the early stages of hypothermia, becoming cold, or hyperthermic, which is overheating. Instinctively, he has tried get the oil off his feathers by preening, which results in ingesting the oil. Ingesting the oil can cause severe damage to his internal organs. The focus birds have on preening overrides all other natural behaviors; including evading predators and feeding, making the bird vulnerable to secondary health problems such as severe weight loss, anemia and dehydration. Many of the oil soaked birds loose their buoyancy and beach themselves in their attempt to escape the cold water. The fortunate ones are reported and picked up by wildlife capture crews.  The others die an extremely slow and sad death - frightened, emaciated, thirsty, hungry and and too exhausted to move to warmth in the cold night or out of the heat of the burning sun during the day.
